Springboard Hackney Graduation 2004

Graduation day marks the end of an era and the beginning of a new period in your life.  That’s why Springboard Hackney students were delighted to celebrate their 2004 annual graduation with a Christmas Party on Monday the 13th of December 2004 at the stylish Hackney Central Club.

The night was held to celebrate the achievements of past and present students of Springboard Hackney.

There were learners from a range of international backgrounds who are currently studying English. Some spoke little or no English when they started at Springboard Hackney and have been able to collect certificates showing their achievements. A quarter of all English Language students have not only gained their qualification, but have also gone on to gain employment, which is something they could only have dreamed of before they started their studies.

The Diamond Project students on Springboard Hackney’s alternative education project demonstrate how real enthusiasm and commitment can lead to achievement. The eighteen students who attended the programme last year, gained twenty qualifications between them and many have gone on to colleges or vocational training.

There were a further 90 learners who have studied NVQs or apprenticeship qualifications in either Accounting, Business Administration, Customer Service, or Information Technology.  These students are on a particularly grilling but thorough programme of study while in employment or work placements, so they have lots of “homework”. To gain an NVQ or apprenticeship qualification is a very great achievement under such conditions and those who had qualified and collected their certificates were cheered by their friends and family.

Springboard’s Entry to Employment learners who had been following an individually tailored programme of tasters in different areas of industry, with IT, literacy and numeracy were also presented with their certificates on the night. Some of these students like Springboard so much that they’ve decided to come back and do further study.

Students were invited to give performances at the graduation event. Amesha amazed the crowd with the inspirational poem "Life is a Journey", Angela wowed the crowd singing "I believe" and then gave an encore of “Hero”, the performance ended with a magnificent performance by Gifty of her own songs entitled "Etome".  The evening ended with a delicious buffet and a disco, where everyone was able to let go and have a good time!

Vida Bond, Springboard Hackney’s manager, said of the event “The graduation is a great day for our students, their family and friends.  It’s been a day of celebration and great way to reward and recognise achievement. We are proud of all Springboard learners, they have worked really hard and have shown a significant amount of dedication, and by achieving their qualifications, the students have opened up many more career opportunities.  We hope they can look back at their time at Springboard with fond memories”.
